Whether you are new or experienced in the automation business, you must be sometimes confused with the terms used by proxy providers. Well, you should be.

Proxy providers will often use vague terms in misleading ways to attract new customers, some of these terms don’t actually hold any real meaning at all and are just marketing terms, while some of them are indeed real.

Some of these terms are also used interchangeably with one other but actually mean the same thing.

Some of these terms are “Residential”, “Rotating”, “Private”, “Shared”, “Elite”, “Social Media Proxies” and many more. But, what do they really mean?

In today’s blog, we are going to find out just that.

 

“Private” & “Shared” proxy

A private proxy is a proxy that only one person (you) have access to, it is not shared with anyone else. You should always use private proxies exclusively if you care about your accounts not getting banned.

Some use the term private to indicate that the proxy is not public (can be accessed by anyone for free) – this is misleading and you should always check what exactly the provider is offering before doing business with him.

A shared proxy is a proxy that is shared between two or more people and is considered being significantly lower quality than a private proxy, using a shared proxy means that you are sharing your IP with some else, a complete stranger (most likely strangers), that is running an unknown amount of users on it and is very likely to get the IP blacklisted by big tech companies.

Do not use shared proxies if you care about your accounts not getting banned, they are not designed for account growth but for other purposes.

 

“Elite” proxy

A misleading, meaningless marketing term, It is basically the same as saying “the best proxy” or “a great proxy”.

This term somehow became very popular in the proxy market and suppliers use it to make customers think they are getting a superior product when actually they do not.

Suppliers know that customers in the proxy market think that “Elite” has some kind of meaning that they do not understand that makes the proxies somehow better than others, they will even sometimes sell these at a premium.

If a provider markets their proxy as “Elite” you should know that this is 100% marketing and you should be careful about doing business with them, as they clearly don’t mind misleading their customers.

 

“Rotating”/”Dynamic” proxy

A rotating proxy is a proxy which has rotating IP addresses, it means that the proxy server will change it’s (and yours) IP every a defined amount of time or requests (or just naturally every now and then).

Rotating proxies are good if you are scraping, want to look more like a natural user or are creating accounts.  

These proxies are also called dynamic proxies and they look more natural and are considered of higher quality since real users have their IPs changed once in a while, for example, when they restart their home router.

For this reason, a residential proxy must be a rotating proxy, since real users have their IPs naturally rotated once in a while.

Mobile proxies will always have rotating IPs, if your mobile proxy is not changing IP once in a while, it is definitely not a mobile proxy.

These IPs are what’s called “backconnect”, since you are not connecting to their public IP (you can’t because it keeps changing and you will have to update your proxy IP every time it changes), but instead, you are connecting to the network from a different static IP and then your IP gets changed (forwarded) to the rotating IP, all mobile & rotating proxies are backconnect proxies.

When buying a rotating IP make sure the IPs don’t all belong to the same subnet, as it would make them all blacklisted very easy and the whole thing pointless and also make sure it is of a decent IP pool size.

You don’t have to worry about these 2 points if the proxy is mobile, it will always have a big IP pool and the subnet can’t be blacklisted (they will have to blacklist the whole carrier).

 

“Static” proxy

Compared to a rotating proxy, a static proxy is a proxy which his IP never changes, this necessarily means that the proxy is a data center proxy, since static IPs are only allocated to companies or users that pay extra money to specifically request a static IP from their ISP.

Since static IPs are not backconnected, you connect to them using their public IP, so if you buy a proxy and get log in details such example_user:example_pass@example_IP:example_port and an IP check returns example_IP as your public IP, your proxy is definitely static.

To make sure your proxy is not static just check your public IP every once in a while and make sure it changes.

 

“Residential” proxy

Residential proxies is the most abused and misleading term used by proxy providers and most often than not what’s being sold is not a true residential proxy.

The issue is that different providers define “Residential” in different ways and there isn’t an official definition, this makes scamming people very easy.

In this part, I will explain what a residential proxy is and the different levels of quality it has and you can use that information yourself to decide how you define a residential proxy.

The way I define a residential proxy is the way the big technology companies define a residential IP – an IP that was allocated for residential use and is actively producing organic traffic by real users.

However, things get way more complicated than that. 

Sure, basically any company can contact an ISP that owns residential IPs and ask to buy these IPs and most times ISP will agree to sell these, but then a few issues come up to mind.

The first is that ISPs will only sell these IPs in blocks (subnets) and the providers will only be able to provide IPs from the same (or a few) subnets, making these IPs very easy to detect and blacklist.

The second is that once these IPs move to the ownership of the proxy providers they will no longer produce real organic residential-like user traffic and big tech is always monitoring IP traffic to make sure it’s genuine, so, if the flow of real organic traffic coming from these IPs will stop, big tech will figure out these IPs are not real residential IPs really fast.

Basically everything you do on the web is monitored and is correlated to your IP by big technology companies.

If a certain IP subnet is supposedly allocated to a neighborhood in California, Google and Facebook will expect it to have at least a few hundred devices connected at a time and produce genuine traffic (they are extremely good at determining what is genuine traffic) and if the subnet doesn’t, they will quickly blacklist the subnet.

The last issue is that ISPs outright sell ownership data of IPs to big tech (mostly Facebook and Google) letting them know who really owns these IP addresses at the end of the day.

Many providers who purchase static residential allocated IPs from ISPs will often create a proxy server that rotates them and call it a residential proxy, however, is it really true residential proxy? I think it isn’t and after reading this I hope you think so too, these IPs will get blacklisted and marked as data center in a split second.

Creating and selling a true residential proxy will require much more work, like getting IPs from many different subnets, making sure they were allocated for residential use, making sure that the ISP isn’t selling the ownership data to big tech and that they produce real traffic 24/7.

Now you must be thinking, this all sounds really complicated and expensive, how can proxy provider sell real residential proxies? Well, they can’t, at least in the usual way.

They only way to sell 100% real residential proxies is to gain access to people devices, legally or illegally and make use of their internet connection to produce a proxy server, most of the time with the user unaware, this can be done via an app in the App/Play store, a software or even malware.

Remember, this is illegal in most cases and can even potentially get you in trouble if the IP address can eventually trace back to you. Also, when using these proxies you will use an internet connection of someone who most likely already have his own accounts, so you are basically using a shard proxy and that can put your accounts at risk.

 

“4G/LTE/Mobile” proxies

4G proxies, often called LTE/Mobile proxies are proxies that are created by using real SIM cards. 

These proxies are the holy grail of proxies and I will explain why.

Remember what I explained in my previous article Origin of IPs and how are they assigned?

If you haven’t read this blog, the short story is that there are two types of IP protocols – IPv4 and IPv6, since IPv4 ran out of address IPv6 was introduced, however, since these are not compatible with each other IPv4 still is the only real used IP protocol and is a major shortage all around the world. 

This led ISPs to use a technology called NAT (Network Address Translation), which basically means that a number of users can use the same IP address at a time, this happens mostly with mobile ISPs and not home ISPs and is great news for growing accounts.

Multiple people sharing the same IP address (up to thousands of people at once) means that the IP can never be blacklisted, imagine Instagram trying to ban your 4G IP – they will have to ban 10s-100s other legitimate users as well. 

Furthermore, since 4G proxies are using NAT they are back connected and have a huge pull of unbannable IPs that you can rotate between in seconds just by logging in and out of the network, each time getting an unbannable different IP from your carrier.

This basically makes 4G proxies the ultimate proxies, as they can never ever be blacklisted, can be rotated indefinitely and since you share your IP with tens of thousands of people, they also produce massive amounts of real user traffic.

These are the best and only proxies you should use if you really care about your accounts.

“Virgin” proxies

Virgin IPs are IPs that are completely new and which the internet has never seen before, in today’s world – they are a myth and they do not exist anymore.

The last IPv4 in the world was assigned in the 25th of November 2019 by RIPE and since then we officially ran out of new IPv4 address, it is possible though that some IPs have been assigned in the past but has never been used to this day, but they are extremely rare and it is hard to tell if an IP is brand new or not.

Virgin IPs in today’s world means IPs that are “virgin” to your specific task, for example, a “virgin Instagram IP” is an IP that Instagram has never ever seen before and can find no data on anywhere on the web, these are also very rare and there is no real way of telling if an IP is a virgin IP or not, since there can always be some record of it somewhere on the web and Instagram’s databases are not publicly accessible.

While you can try very hard to find some info on a specific IP using WHOIS checks, history logs and geolocation data directories and find nothing – it is still very possible and likely that someone, somewhere does have some historic data on the IP, thus making it a nonvirgin IP.

Some proxy provider will this term for marketing, I advise you to stay away from there providers as they clearly don’t mind misleading their customers, these IPs no longer exists and even if you do manage to find one somehow, chances are it was allocated to a business and is a data center IP. 

I’d argue that 4G IPs would be better than virgin IPs anyway, since having good historical data on an IP is better than having no data at all.

 

“Social Media/Instagram/Ticketing/Facebook” proxies

Generally speaking, these terms don’t hold any real general meaning, they are simply marketing terms that sometimes mean something and sometimes don’t mean anything – they have no official or generally accepted meaning.

While they have no general meaning, they sometimes mean that the provider is doing something to the proxy server to optimize it for a specific task, for example block all other traffic but Facebook/Instagram or rotate the IP each time it is detected automatically (this is good for scraping).

A lot of proxy suppliers use these terms for marketing whether they mean anything or not, however I would not consider these terms misleading or a red sign and they do not necessarily mean that the supplier is dishonest.

 

Final note 

Hopefully you now fully understand all the different types of proxies there are and their true meaning and can stay away from scams. 

Always remember – if you are serious about growing accounts and to get truly protected from a proxy perspective you must use a high-quality 4G proxy, as these will have the best chance of keeping your accounts safe.

A proxy server is a server that allows a user to connect to it and use it’s own IP when identifying online (it can also have many other applications), but what are IP addresses anyway? How were they first created and assigned? What is a quality IP address?

What are IP addresses?

In today’s blog we are going to cover the very interesting subject of IPs.

First, there are two types of IPs, IPv4 and IPv6, they stand for Internet Protocol Version 4, and Internet Protocol Version 6.

When the web was first created it had many different internet protocols which allowed computers to communicate with each other and eventually IPv4 became the most popular protocol and was adopted as the standard.

Not many years afterwards the internet revolution began and the web has seen a massive booming of users in the size of which no one could have ever expected, soon experts realized that the 32-bit based IPV4 format which can only support 4 billion addresses from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 will run out of addresses very fast (there are 22 billion internet connected devices as of December 2019) and a new solution had to be found.

This is where IPv6 comes into play, IPv6 is a 128-Bit protocol meaning it theoretically contains 340,282,366,920,938,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 unique IP addresses, this is more than 3 with 34 zeros and should sustain the web’s needs for a long, long (x34 long) time.

However, ever since the introduction of IPv6 adoption rates remained very slow, this is because IPv4 and IPv6 are not backward compatible, this means that software that was written to work with IPv4 will not work with IPv6 which is also why some websites do not support IPv6 at all.

This has brought the prices of IPv4 to increase and the use of techniques like NAT (Network Address Translation) to be introduced, NAT is when ISPs allocate the same IP to a number of devices at once and is a very good news for 4G proxies, as it means that a huge customer base (up to 28k) will have the same IP at a time, making these IP virtually impossible to blacklist – No company will ban tens of thousands of legitimate users just because one of them is using a bot.

 

How IPs are allocated

IANA is the Internet Assigned Number Authority and is the organization that is responsible for allocating IP addresses to local registrars, which in turn assign these IPs to ISPs (Internet Service Providers) such as At&T, Verizon or Comcast.

There are 5 local registrars responsible for different regions:

  1. LACNIC which serves most of the Caribbean and all of Latin America.
  2. APNIC which serves East Asia, Oceania, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
  3. AFRINIC which serves Africa.
  4. ARIN which serves Antarctica, Canada, parts of the Caribbean, and the United States.
  5. RIPE NCC serves Europe, Central Asia, Russia, and West Asia.

ISP receives these IPs with an associated ASIN, an Autonomous System Number, that is used to correlate a specific IP address or block of IPs/subnet with a specific ISP, this helps keep track of which company owns which IP.

An ISP can have multiple ASNs, but an ASN can only be assigned to 1 ISP and an ASN can only be associated with one company.

However, large ISPs are usually made of multiple companies, so they will often hold multiple ASNs.

The ISPs then rent or lease these IPs to the end-user and you can use many websites such as whatismyip.com to find out which ISP owns your IP.

IANA is owned by ICANN, so to sum this up this is the way an IP gets assigned to the end-user:

ICANN => IANA => Local Registrar => ISP => Organization => User

 

How are IP geo locations are determined

Every IP address in the world is connected to a geographical location mainly so websites and advertisers can serve better targeted content to users even when they can’t access their GPS location.

There are multiple companies that are in charge of keeping track of the geolocation of each IP, as they sometimes change, some of these are DigitalElement, MaxMind and of course some of the big tech companies like Facebook and Google also keep their own databases.

Note that these companies are independent private companies and are not some central entity that is officially in charge of collecting this geolocation data, this is why this data is often inaccurate and why you will sometimes get different results from different IP check websites and is also why you will most likely get a geolocation result that can be a region that is very far away from your actual location, although they will usually get the country right.

Big technology companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon have more data and use more sophisticated techniques to track IP geolocation data and will more often have more accurate data.

 

So what is a quality IP address?

Except for the methods we discussed above, a big list of companies including Facebook and Google will also monitor every piece of traffic they can find that they can associate to a certain IP.

Basically, everything you do on the web is monitored and associated to your IP, remember that almost every IP in the world has already been used at least once by someone before you, so finding a clean “virgin” IP is nearly impossible.

This gets more complicated as ISP will almost always allocate IPs in blocks (the same subnet), so residential proxy providers will not only need to make these IPs produce traffic that looks organic but also be very very careful of not getting caught and blacklisting the entire IP subnet.

Another point worth mentioning is that most ISP will sell their data to big technology companies, literally telling them which company owns which IP address.

So, A quality IP is an IP address which:

  1. Owned by an ISP which is not selling its data to big tech.
  2. Is rented officially (by the ISP) to a user, not a company.
  3. Is producing real organic constantly and has never been blacklisted before.

This IP is also known as a true residential IP.

Alternatively, the best quality IPs are IPs that are assigned to a huge number of users (not businesses) simultaneously (via CGNAT), this way the IP is overflown by traffic data and the technology companies that monitor these IPs are aware that it is used by hundreds to tens of thousands of people at once.

This makes your traffic disappear in the huge ocean of traffic and also makes the IP basically immune to blacklisting, since that would mean blocking access to a huge poll of real legitimate users.

With these IPs you can get your accounts banned, but you can never get the IP banned and since they are mobile IPs, you can also just reconnect to the network to get assigned a new IP in a few seconds.

 

These are also known as Mobile IPs (4G IPs).

Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of IPs and proxies and can understand what they truly are and how to recognize a quality IP over a bad one.

Are you getting scammed?

During my time as a growth hacker these past 4 years, I have seen so many dishonest proxy providers that it made me lose all hope for a fair market.

In fact, I can say with confidence that the vast majority of suppliers are using at least one of the sketchy tactics I am going to list below, some of these are dishonest marketing terms or tactics and some of them are straight lies and practices that can get your accounts banned and your identity compromised.

Basically, these proxy providers are using the fact that the majority of the consumers in the market have little to no knowledge on proxy servers and the basic way IPs are “created” and distributed, they market and sell promises that are clearly scams.

So, what are the ways proxy providers use to scam you? and how can you tell if a proxy provider is really honest?

 

Cross-selling Proxies

The first method proxy suppliers use to scam and make an extra buck from every proxy is cross-selling, basically they market and promise their customers a private proxy at a premium price, only to proceed and sell the proxy to two or even more people.

If you are growing accounts at any platform you don’t need me to tell you the danger of the situation this puts you in, it is extremely risky for your account, it lowers your trust score significantly and can definitely get you banned. Imagine 10 or 20 IG accounts running on a single residential proxy, ouch.

How to avoid?

Access Logs – Every proxy server has an access log, which basically logs the traffic data and identity (public IPs) of everyone who is connecting to the proxy server. You can ask your supplier to show you a direct live view of the access log for a few hours/days, and check to see if only your IP is listed. 

While this indeed can be faked, dealing with a supplier who refuses showing you the access logs is already a huge red flag.

Remember: ask to see the actual access log that is sitting on the server, not the one that is (sometimes) integrated into their website.

 

Offering Unrealistic Coverage

This is a very popular tactic with sketchy proxy providers and it is super easy to detect. It goes like this – a (often very small) proxy supplier offers proxies from many different locations, sometimes stating “from every state in the US” or “worldwide proxy locations”, while this is very possible for data center proxies, this is straight up impossible for residential or mobile proxies unless you are using a botnet.

Let me explain the differences between these proxies.

Data Center Proxies – IPs that were allocated by IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), the organization that oversees global IP address allocation, to ISPs (Internet Service Providers) or big companies in order for them to provide these IPs to business users, you can easily sit in any place in the world and source them from other countries online.

Residential Proxies – IPs that were allocated by IANA to ISPs in order for them to provide these IPs to regular home users.

These are IPs are extremely difficult and expensive to source because of 2 reasons – the first is that when a company buys these IPs in bulk from an ISP they will all have the same subnet (or only a handful of subnets) and they will all be detected and marked very quickly by big tech companies, making them no different from data center proxies.

The second reason is that ISPs sell ownership information of IPs to companies like Google and Facebook for profit, basically letting them know who owns the IP subnet.

Even if you do manage to somehow get a lot of different IPs from an ISP that marks you a private consumer and doesn’t sell your data to big tech, you will still likely get detected very very fast.

The reason is that even if you own a residential subnet of IPs, big tech companies will always scan every IP they can find and monitor it’s traffic to see anything unusual, they know that all of these IPs belong to the same subnet, and if they see that these IPs all produce unusual (not human) traffic, they will mark the subnet very fast.

To offer residential proxies – a supplier must negotiate a deal with an ISP to sell them consumer IPs, make sure they don’t disclose this info to big tech and make sure that these IPs all produce traffic that is considered organic by big tech.

You can see now why this is very hard to sell just a few true residential proxies, let alone a state or worldwide coverage, to do that you will basically have to be a multi million dollar company or use a botnet (more on botnets below).

Mobile Proxies – IPs that were allocated by IANA to mobile ISPs in order for them to allocate to their users.

Due to the huge shortage of IPv4 IPs (normal IPs), mobile ISPs provide these to tens or hundreds of users at the same time, making it impossible for big tech to blacklist these IPs, this is why these proxies have the most quality IPs possible and are so expensive to produce, they require actual physical hardware and SIM cards.

There is another way to make 4G proxies and that is to use someone else’s smartphone internet connection, usually without them being aware of that (unfortunately, Apple and Google allow these apps on their app stores, just like they allow apps to track you 24/7 in real time and allow Facebook to read your SMS messages), but then you get a proxy which is shared with the real user of the smartphone and not a private proxy.

There is no way of making private 4G proxies without SIM cards and some sort of computing and networking devices (modems, smartphones, PCs, etc).

If a proxy provider offers “4G proxies from every state” or even “from every country”, they must have 10s to 100s of physical offices, with 10s of employees and dedicated fiber optics in each of these offices.

This will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, you can see now why these proxy suppliers are clearly lying as they are certainly not a million dollar company.

What they are doing instead is selling you data center proxies at a markup or just hacking peoples phones to use their connection (botnets), a practice that is illegal and bad for your accounts as other people use these IPs too.

How to avoid?

Use the methods you learned above to identify sketchy proxy providers – A guy selling you proxies on Facebook and doesn’t even have a website does not have 4G proxies in every state in the US and a company with a website which is not professionally made and has spelling mistakes is not selling true residential proxies in every country in the world.

If they did then it means they have millions of dollars and could afford a professional website with great support and a big marketing team.

 

Offering Unrealistic Pricing

Remember, every business needs to turn a profit, so if the pricing seems too good to be true, it usually is.

If the cheapest mobile unlimited plan in the US costs 30$, how can a proxy provider sell their proxies at 30$ and still turn a profit ? This is without taking into account additional hardware and dedicated symmetrical fiber to the home.

Due to IP economics and hardware equipment, if a supplier offers you a “residential proxy” for less than 1$, or a “mobile proxy” for less than 30$ (it is still extremely unlikely that anyone will sell a true 4G proxy at these prices in any country and turn a profit), they are either losing money (very unlikely), cross-selling or lying to you, even huge companies with piles of cash reserves will almost definitely lose money selling at those prices.

How to avoid?

Don’t buy proxies from a provider that is selling proxies below the prices mentioned above, it is certainly a scam.

 

Selling a proxy as 4G/Residential while it’s just a data center proxy

Some proxy providers will sometimes market their proxies as 4G or residential while they are clearly not, most often they will just be rotating data center proxies.

How to avoid?

TL;DR: Ask to see their hardware, research the IP address and ISP, check to see if the IP you are connecting to is the same as your public IP, only buy proxies from well known and trusted suppliers.

 

Using a Botnet

A botnet is a massive network of devices, all controlled by a single entity, in proxy terms we use this term to describe a huge network of devices that have their internet connection controlled in order to produce massive amounts of proxies from real users device, often without them knowing. 

A (not very small) percentage of proxy providers use this method to sell residential or mobile proxies, they basically hack every smartphone or computer they can find and use their internet connection to sell you proxies. This is illegal, can get your accounts banned (since real users are also running accounts on these IPs) and can even get you into trouble with the police.

Imagine someone realizing he got hacked and the police tracing the connected IP back to you, while it is unlikely it is definitely possible. 

It is worth mentioning that some proxy providers do use botnets in a completely legal way, they usually have a popular software or app that runs the proxy server in the background, allowing the developers to earn their money without integrating ads. However, while this might be good for other purposes, it is still bad for growing accounts, as real users will most likely have their own accounts on their devices and these proxies are basically shared proxies.

How to avoid ?

Identifying a botnet proxy provider is actually quite easy, they will almost always market proxies from many different locations and charge unrealistic prices.

Use the methods I described above to identify these botnet providers and do not buy proxies from a company that claims to have that many proxy locations unless it is clearly a huge well known brand with huge piles of cash.

 

Using misleading terms

A huge percentage of proxy suppliers will use misleading and meaningless terms to market their proxies, they are basically using the fact that people don’t really know what these terms mean and lie to sell their proxies.
